# Import from Linear

> Move Linear teams into Kaneo, including workflow states, issues, priorities, labels, assignees, comments, and relations.

Each Linear team becomes a Kaneo project. Read [Import from other tools](/docs/core/migrations.md) first for the rules that apply to every import.

## Before you start

You need:

* To be an admin of the Kaneo workspace you are importing into.
* A Linear personal API key. In Linear, open **Settings → Account → Security & access**, and create a key under **Personal API keys**. Read access is enough.

Invite your team to the Kaneo workspace first. Assignees are matched by email, so anyone who isn't a member yet will have their issues imported unassigned.

## Connect

1. In Kaneo, open **Settings → Workspace → Import** and choose **Linear**.
2. Paste your Linear API key.
3. Select the teams to import. Leave comments on, or turn them off.
4. Start the import. You can leave the page while it runs and check **Recent imports** later.

## What carries over

| Linear | Kaneo |
| - | - |
| Team | Project |
| Team key, for example `ENG` | Project key. If another project in the workspace uses it, Kaneo adds a suffix, for example `ENG-2` |
| Workflow states | Columns, in Linear's order. **Completed**, **Canceled**, and **Duplicate** states become final columns. A **Duplicate** state only becomes a column when an issue is in it. Issues in **Backlog** and **Triage** states go to the project's **Backlog** instead of the board |
| Issue | Task |
| Issue number, for example `ENG-123` | Task number, so `ENG-123` stays `ENG-123` |
| Description | Task description, in Markdown |
| Priority (Urgent, High, Medium, Low) | The same priority |
| Due date | Due date |
| Assignee | Assignee, matched by email |
| Labels | Labels, with their colors |
| Comments | Comments, with the original author's name and date |
| Sub-issues | Subtask relations |
| Blocks, related, similar, and duplicate relations | Blocks relations stay blocks relations. The others become related relations |

## What doesn't

* **Archived issues.** They are skipped.
* **Attachments.** Download anything you need from Linear before you stop using it.
* **Cycles.**
* **Linear projects and milestones.** Issues from all of a team's projects land in the one Kaneo project for that team, without their Linear project or milestone.
* **Estimates.**
* **Sub-issue and relation links to issues in other teams.**

## Troubleshooting

**The key is rejected**: check that you copied the whole key. Linear only shows it once, so create a new one if you lost it.

**A team is missing from the list**: the key only sees teams your Linear account can see.

**Tasks are unassigned**: the assignee's Linear email must match a member of the Kaneo workspace. Invite them, delete the imported project, and import it again, or assign the tasks by hand.
